One of Central Ohio’s hidden gems for year-round, economical family fun is Dublin’s Abbey Theater. This beautiful state-of-the-art theatre, run by the City of Dublin (and located in the Dublin Community Recreation Center) offers a calendar of live performances ranging from puppet shows and plays, to concerts and dance programs. And—best of all—admission is nominal.
Just look at the offerings for February, alone…..
The ever-popular Hansel & Gretel will once again battle the evil witch in a show that combines puppets and live actors. This show is recommended for ages 6 and up and will be offered at 11 a.m. Sat. Feb. 7.
Then at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, The Alaskan Fiddling Poet will charm families. Ken Waldman belts out some of the silliest (and some of the loveliest) lyrics put to fiddle and banjo.
At 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21, OSU Theatre presents Just Like Us, a new play, narrated by an old tree who lives in the middle of a forsaken park. The Greens, who like to recite poetry, and the Blues, who prefer to play musical instruments have hated each other forever. It takes Allina, who is Purple, to teach everyone a lesson.
With this much cheap entertainment in town, I only wish my grandsons lived close enough to go to every show!
The Abbey Theater is located in the Dublin Community Recreation Center on Post Road. Prices for the productions are only $7/adults, $5 children & seniors. 410-4550. www.dublin.oh.us
