Winans Fine Chocolates and Coffees, the newest deliciously decadent addition to Dublin, Ohio, opened earlier this week at 52 S. High St. in Historic Dublin. Since we love to welcome new businesses to Dublin (and since we love chocolate), one of my co-workers and I wandered down to this new confectionary located just a few hundred yards south of our offices. This may or may not be a good thing.
The good part? Let’s start with the smell that welcomes visitors at the door, wrapping you in a fragrant patchwork quilt of heavenly aromas. Once inside, visitors discover a beautiful selection of handmade chocolates created in Winans’ Piqua, Ohio factory including “Wurtles,” Buckeyes, Brittles, Cherry Cordials, Karamels and Chocolate Covered Pretzels. Coffee lovers will appreciate a selection of coffees, freshly roasted in small batches: Vanilla Nut Cream, Crème Brulee, Costa Rica and Snickerdoodle—just to name a few. (One of their most popular blends is Highlander Grog … a lovely nod to the British Isles!) Visitors can savor Espressos, Frozen Hot Chocolates, hot tea and – in a few weeks – Hot Cider. Yum.
An engaging staffer tells me the history of this lovely family owned business … how it started as a bakery in the late 1800s then grew through the years to include hand-dipped chocolates, nuts, copper-kettle caramels and the coffees. She tells me how the owners travel every year to one of the countries that sources their coffee beans—to ensure quality control. After another story about how one lady, “Miss Clara” hand-dips the Buckeyes every day, a sample of the dark chocolate covered orange peel and spotting some Irish-themed treats featured in the Dublin store, I’m sold.
The only “not-so-good” thing about Winans new Dublin, Ohio location? Trying to resist frequent visits!
